The Abington Electric is a sleek and sporty town e-Bike designed, tested and built at the ARCC facility in Cambridge, UK.

Abington Frame

A modern take on a classic style

Crafted from 4130 Chromoly Steel Tubing and fitted with the Gates Carbon Belt Drive, the Abington Electric provides a smooth and responsive ride paired to a low-maintenance and lightweight frame. Machined stainless steel dropouts allow for a variety of drivetrain options and combine with large puncture resistant 650b x 38 tyres to provide a wonderfully comfortable, yet responsive ride. Complete with the ARCC Bikes Intelligent Drive System (IDS) and in a range of colours, there's a configuration to suit all riders.

An Abington Electric fitted with the IDS comes with a range of options, enabling you to customise the bicycle to suit your exacting needs. Each bicycle is individually built, tested and tuned by ARCC engineers and is supported with a 7-year frame warranty, 5-year ARCC electrics warranty, and a 3-year Bosch-backed battery warranty.

ARCC Bikes Intelligent Drive System

Whether used for commuting or pleasure, the Abington Electric delivers a well-tuned, responsive ride everywhere you go. The IDS combines 6 power levels with Automatic Hill Assistance, Launch Control, brake switches, bottom bracket integrated torque and cadence sensors, and a handlebar mounted wireless remote control.

All of these features working together allow cyclists to choose the amount of effort both they, and the motor provide, automatically compensating for hills and gradients, and acceleration for safety when moving away from traffic lights, busy junctions or on hill starts.

The IDS is comprised of a compact, lightweight 250W geared brushless front hub motor, torque and cadence bottom bracket sensor, pod computer, wireless handlebar mounted remote controller, Bosch battery and Apple AirTag, all of which add around 3.7kg to the weight of the bike.

Expertly engineered in Cambridge

The IDS pod, battery latch and side lever, the wireless remote controller and cradle components, ferrules, wire clips and fork supports (when required), are all CNC-machined from solid billets of Peraluman 470 Aluminium Grade 5083/AlMg 4.5Mn, and are polished, anodised, laser engraved and weather-sealed.

State-of-the-art surface-mounted technology is used throughout. Smooth but responsive control of the digital motor is assured by a 32-bit ARM Cortex microcontroller, running at 120MHz, permitting complex performance calculations which run continuously without delay. The ARM device includes 256 kilobytes of Flash Memory to allow for customised motor drive algorithms which adapt instantly to road conditions and user requirements. Highly efficient Power Supplies are used to minimise battery usage, and a 3-axis accelerometer uses micro electromechanical technology to determine how steep the incline is at any moment.

There are also three fully compliant USB-C ports located on the side of the pod for phone or GPS charging at up to 1.5A, as well as ports for integrating lighting systems to the pod and controlling them with the ARCC Wireless Remote Controller, or the free ARCC Control app (available via the Apple App Store and Google-Play).

Technology meets simplicity

The Abington Electric comes with the choice of a 4.0 Ah or 6.0 Ah Bosch battery, which are readily available virtually anywhere in the world. The 4.0 Ah battery gives a typical range of up to 30km and the 6.0 Ah battery up to 52km. The pod is also compatible with the 9.0 Ah Bosch battery, which will increase the range up to 75km.

Battery status lights located on top of the pod and the remote controller, indicate approximately how much power remains in the battery. While those using the ARCC Control app have an estimated battery range in miles or kilometres displayed on the screen.

Bosch Batteries
Battery Mounted on Bike

Bosch batteries are cheaper than conventional e-bike batteries, are robust (rated for a 3m drop onto concrete), charge between 35-50 minutes, and have a 3-year warranty from Bosch. With the battery weighing just 1.2kg, a spare can be carried easily for any extended trip.

The battery pack slides onto the IDS pod, locating with a positive click. When the battery is removed, the bike reverts to its standard configuration and can be used as a regular bike.

Manual and Automatic Modes

The IDS Pod has two power modes. Both the M (Manual) and A (Automatic) modes allow the rider to have complete control over the assist level. The torque and cadence sensor in the bottom bracket, allows the system to detect harder pedalling motion, and automatically provide more assistance within the chosen assist level setting. This results in a very natural cycling action, but with the sensation of being given a gentle boost.

Automatic Hill Assistance

Automatic Mode also makes use of the in-built Inclinometer/Accelerometer sensor which allows the IDS Pod to detect hills and gradients and provide Automatic Hill Assistance accordingly, by increasing or decreasing the power delivered. This results in the riders exertion levels remaining virtually constant, as if travelling on the flat.

Launch Control

The system also features a Launch Control function which delivers maximum power to the motor for a period of up to three seconds, enabling an effortless get-away to be achieved when moving away from traffic lights, crossings in heavy traffic, or when starting on a hill.

ARCC Control App

Using the wireless remote controller or the ARCC Control app, the user has complete control of the pod status, and level of assistance received from the drive system. Through the ARCC Control app, riders have access to all assistance modes, including automatic hill assist, launch control and walk mode, accurate battery range estimates, cadence and gear change guidance, navigation and ride history, as well as control of lights, indicators, and app settings to personalise their ride.
